SEG Gravity and Magnetics Committee

2003 Annual Report

Guy Flanagan, Chairman

Alan Herring, Vice Chairman

The gravity and magnetics committee's objective is to serve as a focus for activities within the Society dealing with gravity and magnetics and to promote and expand the knowledge and use of gravity and magnetic methods. The committee meets twice yearly, once at midyear and again at the annual meeting. The 2002 Annual Meeting was extremely successful with three technical sessions devoted to gravity and magnetics as well as a number of other sessions with gravity and magnetic related papers. Additionally we had a successful post convention workshop on "Noise Sources in Gravity Data" thanks to the efforts of Mark Ander. For the 2003 Annual Meeting we expect to have two sessions devoted to gravity and magnetics as well as our usual Tuesday luncheon that will feature Dr. John Warme, of the Colorado School of Mines, speaking on impact craters. Additionally, a post-convention workshop on "Enhanced Seismic Imaging and Interpretation using Gravity and Magnetics" is being organized by Harold Yarger of ChevronTexaco and should prove to be educational and enlightening. A capstone to what we hope is a highly successful convention will be the awarding of Honorary Membership in the SEG to one of our own, Richard Hansen. It is especially pleasing to see Richard's contributions to both the SEG as editor, geophysics in general and as mentor to many students honored in this fashion. Our committee continues to be highly involved in supplying input to the Leading Edge in the form of both the Meter Reader column, currently edited by John Peirce and special issues. Pat Millegan and Tiku Ravat have just completed preparation of a special issue on "Geophysics in Space" which will be published shortly. Additionally, Alan Reid has agreed to be editor for a CD volume on gravity and magnetics to be published by the SEG. Michal Ruder has continued to head up our efforts in continuing education, along with her duties on the Executive Committee, by presenting her highly successful short course in a number of locations throughout the year.
