SEG Gravity and Magnetics Committee

Committee Objectives

The objectives of the Gravity & Magnetics Committee are to:

  1. Serve as the focus for activities within the Society dealing with gravity and magnetic methods of exploring the earth;

  2. Serve in an advisory capacity to the Executive Committee and other committees of the Society on matters dealing with gravity and magnetic methods;

  3. Plan, organize and implement activities which would promote gravity and magnetic methods;

  4. Furnish the name of an individual, to act as a Technical Program Subcommittee Chairman to organize gravity and magnetics sessions at the Annual Meeting and to assist in the assembly of papers for those sessions.

Committee activities may include recommending to the Executive Committee material on gravity and magnetic methods of exploration which should be considered for publication in GEOPHYSICS and/or SEG special publications. Organizing tutorial and research workshops, special symposia, and programs for SEG Annual Meetings and developing and monitoring special projects are also potential activities in which the G&M committee may become involved.

2003 - 2004 Committee Goals

  • Facilitate integration of gravity and magnetic data and techniques with seismic data to improve geologic interpretations and, in turn, exploration efforts:

  • a) Support for the update of SEG Monograph Series No. 1, Elementary Gravity and Magnetics for Geologists and Seismologists,
    b) Support for SEG Continuing Education Courses in Gravity & Magnetics, and
    c) Support workshops for emerging Gravity and Magnetics technologies.

  • Establish data standards, definitions and formats for gravity and magnetics data.
  • Continue with close coordination and cooperation between the gravity & magnetics with the mining and near surface exploration communities.
